Chemicals are a necessary part of maintaining a clean and safe pool, but there are some hazards you should be aware of.

At Trasolini pools, your safety is of the utmost importance to us, so we’ve put together a handy list of dos and don’ts to keep you and your family safe.

The dos and don’ts of pool chemical safety

DO

  • Read and follow all instructions
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets
  • Keep containers closed when not in use
  • Use separate and clean metal or plastic measuring cups and scoops for each different chemical
  • Wear safety gear, including goggles, gloves and footwear
  • Store chemicals in their original containers
  • Store chemicals in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture
  • Add chemicals to the pool water
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any chemicals
  • Use and store chemicals in well-ventilated areas
  • Test your water balance daily for sanitizer levels, pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness
  • Maintain a proper balance of copper-based algaecide to prevent stains on your pool’s surface
  • Keep chemicals away from food and food surfaces
  • Seek medical help right away in the case of poisoning or injury
  • Dispose of unused pool chemicals only at designated household hazardous waste disposal sites

DO NOT

  • Do not add pool water to chemicals (unless the directions specifically say to do so)
  • Do not use unlabeled chemicals
  • Do not mix chemicals together (unless clearly instructed to)
  • Do not place spilled chemicals back into their containers
  • Do not reuse containers
  • Do not touch undiluted chemicals with your hands
  • Do not smoke, drink, or eat while handling chemicals
  • Do not expose chemicals to heat or flame
  • Do not store liquids above chemicals or solids
  • Do not stack chemical containers
  • Do not store chemicals above your head
  • Do not store pool chemicals near other hazardous household supplies
  • Do not store oxidizers and acids near each other
  • Do not dispose of unused chemicals down the drain
