Canada Day might look a little different this year, with BC health officials continuing to remind residents to limit the size of gatherings

Come July 1st, festivities may need to be limited to just your household or “bubble”, so planning an at-home family pool party is a great way to celebrate the day. Here is everything you need to create a memorable poolside event.

Tips for throwing the greatest Canada Day family pool party

1. Clean your pool

Make sure your party starts off on the right foot by giving your pool and deck a deep clean. Remove any debris from your pool, give the walls a good scrub, run your pool’s vacuum, clean out the filters, and give any pool furniture a good once over. You may also want to consider shocking your pool in the week leading up to July 1st to ensure the water is at its cleanest.

2. Put up some patriotic decorations

What is a party without decorations? Buy some Canada Day themed beach towels, string up some party lights, and pick up some fun Canada Day decor at your local dollar store. A fun activity to get the kids involved in is to get some red and white balloons, blow them up, stick some glow sticks inside them, and then float them on your pool after the sun goes down.

3. Serve up a poolside feast

You could always do a classic poolside BBQ but why not switch things up and at least include one or more of these tasty Canadian inspired treats:

  • Ketchup chips
  • Poutine
  • BeaverTails
  • Hawaiian pizza (a Canadian classic!)
  • Butter tarts
  • Bannock
  • Nanaimo bars
  • Tourtière
  • Anything covered in maple syrup

4. Don’t forget the drinks

Caesars, a Canada Day staple, should definitely be on the menu for the adults, and why not include some non-alcoholic versions for your kids too. You could also serve up some locally produced beers, wines, juices, etc., or theme the drinks to all be red and white!

5. Stay safe

Just because you are letting loose and having fun doesn’t mean you can forget to be safe. Remember to avoid drinking and swimming, supervise any kids while they are using the pool, and right now it is especially important to stay out of the water if you are not feeling well.
